If collagen is an animal protein, how can vegan collagen exist? The answer is simple, but often lost in advertising shortcuts: plants do not produce collagen. A vegan product therefore does not contain collagen derived from plants. However, it can provide the body with selected amino acids and other substances that the body uses for its own collagen production.
Collagen is naturally an animal protein
Collagen is the basic structural protein of connective tissues. It is found, for example, in cartilage, tendons, ligaments, bones, skin, and blood vessels. In nature, it is formed in the bodies of animals. Plants do not produce it.
Common collagen supplements therefore come from animal raw materials, most often from bovine, porcine, fish, or poultry tissues.
So, if someone talks about "plant collagen", it is an inaccurate term. Broccoli does not have collagen – not even if it goes to the gym three times a week.
So what does vegan collagen mean?
The term "vegan collagen" is used as an understandable shortcut for a vegan alternative to collagen nutrition.
Such a product does not contain ready-made animal protein. It can be based on ingredients of plant, mineral, or fermentation origin.
The essence is not to imitate animal collagen merely by name. A meaningful formula should be based on how the body creates collagen and what, besides collagen itself, makes up connective tissues.
What happens to ingested collagen?
A common idea is something like this: we swallow collagen, and the body sends it directly to a sore knee. But that's not how it works.
Proteins are broken down into amino acids and smaller peptides during digestion. These are absorbed and the body uses them further according to its current needs.
In the case of hydrolyzed collagen, some small peptides may also be absorbed. However, even these do not have an address label saying "right knee".
The regulatory processes of the body decide where and how the ingested substances will be used. Nutrition can provide building blocks, but it does not determine their exact destination.
What does the body create its own collagen from?
The body continuously produces collagen itself. For its construction, it needs amino acids. Glycine is exceptionally abundant in the structure of collagen, and proline and lysine are also important.
But it's not just about three isolated amino acids. Collagen formation is a complex biological process that also requires enzymes, vitamins, and minerals.
Vitamin C plays a crucial role. It contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of cartilage, bones, skin, blood vessels, gums, and teeth.
Animal collagen and vegan alternative are not the same
It's fair to state things precisely: a vegan alternative is not animal collagen in a different package. It differs in origin, composition, and the way the formula is put together.
At the same time, it is not true that the only way to supply the body with substances used in collagen formation is to consume ready-made animal collagen.
In both cases, the body works with substances it obtains after digestion and absorption. For a specific product, therefore, the actual composition, the doses of individual substances, and the quality of the raw materials used are more important than the label on the front of the jar itself.
Moreover, the results of studies conducted with a specific raw material or formula cannot be automatically transferred to every product labeled "vegan collagen". The same name does not mean the same composition.
